India announces travel advisories to citizens staying in Myanmar amid the tense situation

Planning a trip to Myanmar? The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued an updated travel advisory, urging Indian nationals to avoid non-essential travel to the neighboring country due to the deteriorating security situation. This advisory comes in the wake of escalating violence between the Myanmar military and anti-junta groups, particularly in the Rakhine state.

What's happening in Myanmar?

MyanmarMyanmar has been in turmoil since the military seized power in a coup in February 2021. The country is facing widespread unrest, with ethnic rebel groups and pro-democracy forces engaged in armed conflict with the military junta. This has resulted in significant violence and displacement, making travel to many parts of the country unsafe.

Why the travel advisory?

Myanmar Travel Advisory Posted by: Randhir Jaiswal, Official Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs, India on X

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a travel advisory for Indian nationals in Myanmar due to the deteriorating security situation. This is primarily due to:

  • Intensified fighting: Clashes between rebel groups and the junta have intensified, particularly in Rakhine state, where the advisory strongly discourages travel.

  • Unrest and violence: The ongoing conflict has led to widespread violence and instability across the country, posing risks to travelers.

  • Limited resources: Healthcare and emergency services may be limited or unavailable in certain areas.

Here's what you need to know:

Rakhine state is a no-go zone: Due to the ongoing conflict and scarcity of essential commodities, the MEA strongly advises against traveling to Rakhine. If you're currently residing there, leaving immediately is highly recommended.

Register with the Indian Embassy: If you're staying in Myanmar, ensure you register with the Indian Embassy in Yangon. This will help them stay updated on your whereabouts and offer assistance if needed.

Exercise caution in other regions: Even outside Rakhine, stay vigilant and avoid travel to areas affected by violence. Interstate travel by road is also best avoided.

Stay informed: Keep yourself updated on the latest developments by following reliable news sources and the MEA website.

India's stance:

The Indian government has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and called for a peaceful resolution through dialogue. They are providing humanitarian assistance to those affected by the conflict and are committed to the restoration of peace and democracy in Myanmar.
