However, for Kirubakaran Rajendran and his family, their dream vacation to Ladakh turned into a nightmare as they struggled to acclimatize to the high altitude.
In a gripping post on X, Mr. Rajendran shared the harrowing experience of how the thin air wreaked havoc on their bodies, turning their thrilling adventure into a desperate struggle for oxygen.
Ladakh's majestic beauty is undeniable. With its dramatic landscapes, from snow-capped peaks to expansive valleys, it’s no wonder that it’s a sought-after destination for adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The region offers unique experiences such as:
High Mountain Passes: Khardung La Pass, one of the highest motorable roads in the world, offers thrilling drives and panoramic views.
Monasteries: Ancient monasteries like Hemis and Thiksey, perched on hilltops, provide spiritual solace and historical insights.
Adventure Activities: From trekking to river rafting, Ladakh is an adventurer's paradise.
What was supposed to be a thrilling journey quickly turned into an ordeal for the Rajendran family. Mr. Rajendran explained in his post, "Oxygen availability goes down once you move to higher altitude regions.

As the altitude increases, the atmospheric pressure drops, and the number of oxygen molecules per breath is reduced." This fundamental change in the environment can be a shock to the system, especially for those unaccustomed to such conditions.
Even simple activities like walking or climbing stairs became exhausting ordeals for the family. The real challenge began when they attempted to cross high passes like Khardung La, towering at 18,000 feet.
At such extreme altitudes, oxygen levels plummet, making it difficult even for seasoned travelers to catch their breath.
Cab drivers advised them to limit their time outside to just 10 minutes to avoid the debilitating effects of oxygen deprivation.
Despite allowing two days for acclimatization, the Rajendran family found themselves unable to cope with the high altitude.
"Even after two days, our bodies didn't adapt. My ten-year-old kid found it really hard to breathe. His oximeter reading went below 65. All three of us couldn't eat well; he started vomiting whatever he ate, making his body dehydrated, and couldn't sleep well," Mr. Rajendran recounted.
The family decided to cancel their bookings and take a flight back home, prioritizing their health over their vacation plans.
"The vacation was supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable but not this adventurous, putting health at risk. Just be well prepared if you plan your Ladakh trip, and anticipate all the worst-case scenarios. Ladakh is so beautiful, no doubt about it, but it might not suit everyone," Mr. Rajendran concluded.
Mr. Rajendran's post resonated with many travelers who shared their own experiences and advice:
Acclimatization is Key: One user wrote, "High altitude places are not to be hurried. Acclimatization, step-by-step altitude increase, and lots of rest are necessary."
Gradual Ascent: Another suggested, "It's better to avoid flying directly to Leh. Approaching Leh by road allows for gradual acclimatization."
Health Over Adventure: Many supported the family's decision to prioritize their health, highlighting the dangers of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Ladakh remains a mesmerizing destination, but it’s essential to be aware of the challenges posed by its high altitude.
Proper acclimatization, gradual ascent, and being prepared for the worst-case scenarios can make all the difference.
The Rajendran family's experience serves as a poignant reminder that while adventure beckons, health should always come first.
