Which Generation Spends the Most on Travel? Millennials or GenZ?

Travel has always been a priority for many, but Millennials (born between 1981-1996) are leading the charge when it comes to spending. The recent surge in travel spending among younger generations, particularly Millennials, highlights the shifting priorities in today’s tourism landscape.

As we explore which generation is spending the most on travel, it becomes evident that Millennials invest heavily in travel and drive global travel trends.

Millennials top travel spending, driven by unique experiences and smart benefits.

Millennials Outspend Other Generations on Travel

This figure surpasses the spending of Gen X (₹2.56 lakh or $3,059), Gen Z (₹2.19 lakh or $2,622), and Boomers (₹2.17 lakh or $2,600).

Travel makes up 34% of Millennials’ annual spending, second only to everyday necessities like groceries and retail shopping.

What makes this generation stand out is their preference for experiences over material goods. Over 86% of Millennials prioritize cultural and immersive travel experiences, seeking out authentic interactions with local cultures.

This experience-centric mindset is significantly shaping the global tourism industry, encouraging destinations to offer more tailored and immersive opportunities.

Digital platforms and social media play a crucial role in their decision-making process, as they gather travel inspiration from Instagram, travel blogs, and online reviews.

However, despite their significant travel spending, Millennials remain cost-conscious. Skyscanner’s research shows that budget is a top priority for young travelers, with more than half opting to fund their trips with their income and personal savings.

They actively search for budget-friendly options, frequently traveling during off-seasons to reduce costs and avoid crowds.

A notable 52% of Millennials redeem their travel rewards frequently, indicating that loyalty programs and reward points are highly effective in encouraging travel.

Lounge access is particularly prized, with 44% of Millennials ranking it as the most desirable credit card benefit.
