At around 1:15pm IST, Japan's southern coast was struck by two powerful earthquakes. The first quake, with a magnitude of 6.9, was swiftly followed by a more intense 7.1-magnitude tremor, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). This seismic activity has led the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue a tsunami advisory, urging caution along the affected coastal areas. Here is what we know so far about today's Japan earthquake.
According to the JMA, the initial quake registered a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 and was followed by the second tremor in less than a minute. The first jolt hit off the eastern coast of Kyushu, Japan's southern main island, at a depth of about 30 kilometers. The second earthquake, striking 20 kilometers northeast of Miyazaki, occurred at a depth of 26 meters.
The twin tremors have prompted a tsunami advisory, predicting waves of up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) along the southern coast of Kyushu and the nearby island of Shikoku. The Japanese government has swiftly set up a special task force to oversee rescue operations. The JMA has warned residents and visitors to stay away from the sea and coastal areas until the warning is lifted, emphasizing that tsunamis can strike repeatedly.
In the wake of the earthquakes, nuclear plant operators on Kyushu and Shikoku are conducting thorough assessments to ensure their facilities remain safe. Meanwhile, Japan's NHK public television has reported broken windows at the Miyazaki airport, which lies close to the quakes' epicenter.
Japan, part of the Pacific "ring of fire," is no stranger to seismic activity. The nation is among the world's most earthquake-prone areas. The devastating magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami in March 2011, which killed nearly 20,000 people and triggered the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, remains fresh in memory. More recently, a magnitude 7.6 quake struck the north-central region of Noto on January 1, leaving 241 people dead.
For travelers planning a visit to Japan, it's essential to stay informed about current conditions and heed local advisories. While Japan's resilience and preparedness in handling natural disasters are commendable, safety should always be a top priority.
