The past few days have been rough for travelers, as flights bomb threats have caused serious disruptions across India. Between October 14 and 16, a total of 19 hoax bomb threats hit flights, both domestic and international, leading to diversions, delays, and widespread confusion. While all of these threats turned out to be false, the impact was very real for thousands of passengers and airline staff.
It all kicked off on October 14, when Air India’s Mumbai-New York flight, along with two IndiGo flights heading to Jeddah and Muscat, were hit with bomb threats. As a result, Air India’s flight AI-119 was diverted to Delhi, leaving passengers stranded overnight in hotels while security protocols were followed. This is only the beginning over the next 72 hours, numerous other flights were targeted by similar threats, resulting in mass delays.
By Tuesday, even more flights were affected, including Air India Express, SpiceJet, Akasa Air, and others. Passengers waiting for their flights had to endure long delays, some as much as 11 hours, as security teams cleared planes for takeoff. The effects rippled across airports, making it a tough few days for anyone with travel plans.

In a bizarre twist, the Mumbai Police apprehended a 17-year-old boy from Chhattisgarh. The teen allegedly issued some of the flights bomb threats to settle a financial dispute with a former friend. Investigations revealed that the boy created a fake social media handle to target his friend and posted bomb threats against multiple flights, including one bound for New York.
His actions have led to widespread flight disruptions, and while he is now in custody, authorities are still investigating other threats.
Hoax flights bomb threats come with real consequences. Every time a bomb threat is reported, airlines are forced to follow strict security measures. This means diverting flights, evacuating passengers, and conducting thorough checks of planes and luggage. These steps can result in hours of delays.
The financial cost is also significant. Airlines not only have to manage the logistics of rescheduling flights but also bear the cost of providing accommodations, meals, and refunds to affected passengers. When a flight is delayed due to a bomb threat, it causes a domino effect, delaying subsequent flights and impacting hundreds of travelers.

India’s Civil Aviation Minister, K Rammohan Naidu, reassured the public that investigations are underway to address these flights bomb threats. The government is considering stricter penalties, including placing those responsible on no-fly lists. As investigations continue, officials are also looking into the international origins of some threats.
With flights bomb threats causing massive disruptions, the aviation sector in India is tightening security measures. Passengers can only hope for calmer skies and smoother flights in the coming days as authorities work to resolve this alarming situation. If you're flying soon, stay informed and travel safe.
