Massive Avalanche Strikes Uttarakhand’s Chamoli; Many Feared Trapped

A massive avalanche struck near Mana village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on February 28, leaving at least 57 people feared trapped under the snow. The avalanche, which occurred close to a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) camp, has triggered an urgent rescue operation in the high-altitude region.

Rescue operations have already begun

According to reports, the victims were primarily construction workers engaged in road-building activities when the avalanche hit. Rescue teams, including the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), have been deployed to the site. Despite adverse weather conditions and blocked routes, teams are working tirelessly to locate and rescue those trapped under the snow.

So far, 16 individuals have been rescued, with three requiring medical attention at a nearby military hospital. Rescue operations are ongoing to locate the remaining 41 missing workers. Authorities fear that the number of casualties may rise as efforts continue. The extreme terrain, heavy snowfall, and lack of proper communication infrastructure have posed significant challenges to the ongoing rescue operations.

Colonel Ankur Mahajan of the BRO highlighted the difficulty of reaching the affected area, stating that snow accumulation and landslides have made accessibility a major hurdle. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted continued cold weather, with thunderstorms and freezing temperatures further complicating rescue efforts.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has assured that all necessary resources are being mobilized to aid the rescue mission. “The safety of the trapped individuals is our top priority. We are coordinating with all relevant agencies to ensure a swift response,” he stated.

Chamoli, an ecologically sensitive region in the Himalayas, is prone to avalanches and landslides, especially during the winter months. Experts warn that climate change and unchecked development in the region have made such disasters more frequent and severe. In 2021, a glacier burst in the same district led to catastrophic flooding, claiming dozens of lives and damaging hydropower projects.

The latest incident raises concerns about safety measures and early warning systems for workers engaged in high-altitude construction projects. Authorities are urging stricter safety protocols and improved monitoring to prevent further tragedies in the future.

Travel Advisory: Roads blocked, areas inaccessible

Due to the avalanche, several key roads in the Chamoli district, including routes leading to Mana village and surrounding areas, have been blocked. Authorities have advised travelers to avoid the region until further notice. Rescue operations and snow clearance efforts are underway, but extreme weather conditions continue to pose challenges.

Tourists planning to visit the Badrinath area or nearby trekking routes should reconsider their travel plans, as accessibility remains highly restricted. The Uttarakhand state administration has urged visitors to stay updated through official channels and exercise caution while traveling in high-altitude regions during winter.

As rescue operations continue, the nation watches with bated breath, hoping for the safe recovery of those still trapped beneath the snow. The next few hours will be critical as teams race against time in the harsh mountain conditions.
