According to the World Happiness Report 2024, Singapore has maintained its position as the happiest country in Asia for the years 2021 to 2023, marking the second consecutive time it has topped the happiness charts for the region. Despite retaining its lead in Asia, Singapore's global ranking has experienced a slight decline, dropping five places from 25th to 30th happiest country in the world. Notably, Finland secured the top position globally, followed by Denmark and Iceland. Within Asia, Singapore is followed by Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.
The rankings in the World Happiness Report 2024 are based on data from the Gallup World Poll, which evaluates a population's happiness over a three-year period. Researchers consider six key factors: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and corruption. Singapore excelled in indicators such as GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, and perceived low corruption. However, the country faced challenges in areas like perceived social support, freedom to make life choices, and generosity, according to the report.
The report also delved into happiness across different life stages, revealing that individuals in the upper middle age range reported the highest levels of happiness in Singapore. Conversely, those aged 60 and above reported lower levels of happiness. This underscores the importance of providing support to the elderly and underserved segments of society.
As happiness becomes an increasingly prominent measure of societal well-being, understanding the happiest countries in Asia provides valuable insights into regional trends and cultural dynamics. India maintains its position at 126th in the happiness index, reflecting stability from the previous year. Factors like marital status, social engagement, and physical health influence life satisfaction among older Indians, with contentment in living arrangements being particularly crucial. This challenges the assumption that age-related satisfaction is limited to high-income nations, emphasizing the diverse factors affecting life satisfaction in India's older population, which is the world's second-largest at 140 million individuals aged 60 and above.

Older Indian men, especially those married and educated, tend to report higher life satisfaction. However, dissatisfaction with living arrangements, perceived discrimination, and poor health correlate with lower satisfaction levels. Interestingly, while older age generally correlates with higher satisfaction in India, older women often report lower satisfaction levels than men, despite facing more challenges. Education level and social caste also play significant roles in determining life satisfaction among older Indians. Overall, social support appears to be a crucial determinant, especially for women, contradicting the common belief of declining satisfaction with age.
