Here are practical tips and tricks for dealing with Indian airport customs:

1. Know the Basics

  • Declaration Form: All passengers must fill out a customs declaration form if they are carrying items that need to be declared or are beyond the duty-free allowance.

  • Green and Red Channels: Choose the Green Channel if you have nothing to declare and are within the duty-free allowance. If you have goods to declare or are unsure, take the Red Channel.

2. Familiarize Yourself with Duty-Free Allowances

  • Alcohol: Adults are allowed to bring in 2 liters of alcoholic beverages.

  • Tobacco: When it comes to tobacco, the maximum allowance is 100 Cigarettes or 25 Cigars or 125 grams of tobacco.

  • Gold: There are specific limits on the quantity of gold jewelry and bullion one can bring, varying for male and female passengers, and often updated based on current regulations. As of writing this article, Male passengers are allowed to carry up to 20 grams and 30 grams for the female passengers.

  • Currency: There are restrictions on the amount of Indian and foreign currency you can carry. It's crucial to declare amounts exceeding the prescribed limits.

  • Electronics: For personal use, there are generally no issues, but quantities should be reasonable. High-value items may need to be declared.

  • Medication: Carry prescription medications in original packaging with a doctor’s prescription.

  • Prohibited Items: Narcotics, arms, ammunition, and protected wildlife are strictly prohibited. Also, importing drones without permission is not allowed.

(Note: Although don’t majorly rely on the app. The app is not very reliable in terms of usage as per the customer's review.)

For any valuable items you're carrying, especially new purchases or electronics, keeping receipts can help prove their value and ownership, simplifying the customs process. (This is an important step. Make sure to have all bills handy and ready before leaving to the airport)

6. Be Honest and Cooperative

Honesty is the best policy when dealing with customs. If in doubt, declare. Customs officers are more likely to be lenient with honest mistakes than with intentional omissions.

7. Know Your Rights and Responsibilities

Understanding your rights, in case you need to appeal a customs decision, is essential. However, also be aware of your responsibilities, such as not carrying banned items and adhering to local laws.

8. Prepare for Agriculture and Food Restrictions

India has strict regulations on importing plants, seeds, and certain food items to prevent the spread of pests and diseases. Ensure you're not carrying such items unless you have the necessary permits.
