Severe Weather Disrupts Travel in Himachal & Kashmir: IMD Issues Alerts for Snow and Landslides

As of March 3, 2025, severe weather conditions have disrupted travel across Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, posing significant challenges for tourists and locals alike. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for these regions, forecasting heavy rain and snowfall due to a fresh western disturbance affecting the Western Himalayan region.

With road closures, power outages, and avalanche risks, travelers need to stay informed and take necessary precautions before planning their journeys.

Himachal Pradesh: Orange Alert for Heavy Snowfall and Rain

Travelers heading to Himachal Pradesh should be aware of major disruptions due to heavy snowfall and landslides. The IMD has issued an orange alert for the state, predicting intense rain and snowfall, particularly in the districts of Chamba, Kangra, and Lahaul-Spiti. This weather pattern is expected to persist for the next 24 to 48 hours, leading to blocked roads and temporary closures of key tourist routes. The Chandigarh-Manali highway has been intermittently shut due to landslides, with the Banala area in Mandi district experiencing a dangerous road collapse. In Manali, the Hadimba temple -- an iconic tourist attraction -- suffered damage due to falling tree branches weighed down by snow. Additionally, local authorities have closed schools and certain public spaces as a safety measure.

Jammu & Kashmir: Yellow Alert for Rain and Snow

Jammu & Kashmir is facing similar travel disruptions, with snowfall and landslides affecting road connectivity. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the region, warning of isolated heavy snowfall, thunderstorms, and lightning. The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH-44), a crucial route for travelers, remains closed due to snow accumulation and mudslides, leaving many vehicles stranded. The Gurez Valley in Bandipora district witnessed an avalanche in Khandyal village, although no casualties were reported. Authorities have issued warnings for avalanche-prone areas, urging travelers to exercise extreme caution. The National Disaster Management Authority has also issued alerts for the region over the next 24 hours, emphasizing the need for preparedness among tourists and residents alike.

Travel Advisory: Safety First for Visitors

Given the hazardous conditions, tourists planning trips to Himachal Pradesh or Jammu & Kashmir should take the following precautions:

  • Stay Updated: Regularly check official IMD updates and local news for the latest weather information.

  • Reconsider Travel Plans: Postpone or adjust travel itineraries to avoid the affected regions during this period.

  • Follow Local Authorities: Adhere to instructions from local authorities and disaster management agencies.

  • Carry Essentials: If traveling is unavoidable, pack extra food, warm clothing, and emergency supplies in case of unexpected delays.

Reschedule, Not Risk

For those with upcoming travel plans, postponing trips to these regions might be the safest option. As authorities work to restore normalcy, ensuring your safety should be the top priority. While Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir remain breathtaking destinations, it’s crucial to wait until conditions improve before embarking on your journey.
