In a welcome twist for travelers, airfares on some of India's busiest routes have unexpectedly dipped for the upcoming year-end holiday season. This comes as a relief for many who were anticipating the usual surge in prices around Christmas and New Year's.
Compared to the same period last year, fares on major routes like Delhi-Mumbai, Mumbai-Bengaluru, and Mumbai-Chennai have dropped by up to 28%. This translates to some very attractive deals, with the average airfare on the Mumbai-Bengaluru route falling 24%. As of 14th December 2023, the prices are Rs. 4,427 for new years eve.
Industry experts attribute this unexpected dip to airlines' efforts to rectify their pricing strategies before Diwali. In the lead-up to the festival, many airlines kept fares high to maximize their yields. However, this resulted in lower passenger numbers than anticipated.
To fill their planes during the peak holiday season, airlines are now offering more competitive fares. Additionally, the recent decline in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices has also helped to make air travel more affordable.
This sudden drop in fares is undoubtedly good news for travelers planning to fly domestically over the holidays. However, it's important to remember that these deals might not last long. As travel demand picks up closer to Christmas and New Year's, fares could start to climb again.
If you're looking to take advantage of these lower fares, here are a few tips:
Book early: The earlier you book, the more likely you are to get the best deals.
Be flexible with your travel dates: If you can, avoid traveling on peak days like Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
Consider flying on weekdays: Fares are often cheaper on weekdays than on weekends.
Sign up for airline and travel website alerts: This way, you'll be notified when new deals become available.

The Delhi-Mumbai route, India's busiest, still sees over 730 flights operating per week.
The average airfare on the Delhi-Mumbai route for the December 24-January 1 period has seen a year-on-year decline of 2% for tickets booked 30 days in advance.
Some airlines, like Vistara, are offering special sales on their domestic networks for travel throughout the year.
