In a groundbreaking initiative to streamline passenger processes at Indian airports, the Digi Yatra Foundation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA), has introduced the DigiYatra app. This innovative app aims to simplify airport check-in procedures, rendering them completely paperless while incorporating cutting-edge facial recognition technology.
The Digi Yatra platform will be based on four main elements: Connected Passengers, Connected Airports, Connected Flying, and Connected Systems. These pillars aim to enable passengers to:
Efficiently plan trips by identifying price trends and estimating future airfares at the time of ticket booking.
Optionally link their Aadhaar to airlines and other partners during booking for faster airport entry and automated check-ins, eliminating the need for paper-based processes.
Quickly pass through security scanners with advanced biometric security solutions.
Receive relevant information about facilities, protocols, airline timings, and airport queue lengths.
Engage in personalized digital offerings at experience zones.
Receive real-time notifications about congestion and delays for better visibility on the next steps of their journey.
Easily navigate through the airport using digital guidance systems, interactive kiosks, and augmented reality apps.
Stay connected during flights and enjoy immersive experiences, including digitally booking in-flight services and destination-based offerings.
Receive a prompt when their luggage reaches the baggage claim belt.
Submit grievances, share experiences, and provide feedback.
The DigiYatra app is currently operational at three major airports:
Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi
Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi
Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata
Pune International Airport
Vijayawada International Airport,
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport
Available as a free download on both the Play Store for Android phones and the App Store for iOS phones, DigiYatra provides users with a seamless enrollment process. Upon downloading the app, users are prompted to register using their mobile number and OTP (Aadhaar Linked Mobile Number). They can then link their identity credentials using DigiLocker or offline Aadhaar, uploading a selfie photo to complete the enrollment process. A unique Digi Yatra ID is generated, which must be shared when purchasing airline tickets. This ID is transmitted to the departing airport along with passenger data from the airlines.
DigiYatra's enrollment process involves a few simple steps:
Download and Register: Download the DigiYatra app from the Play Store or App Store, register using your mobile number and OTP (Aadhaar Linked Mobile Number).
Link Identity Credentials: Connect your identity credentials using DigiLocker or offline Aadhaar, uploading an XML file for Offline Aadhaar.
Take a Selfie: Capture a selfie when prompted and upload it to the app.
Update Boarding Pass: Update your boarding pass on the DigiYatra app and share it with the departure airport.
At the airport, passengers can follow these steps for a hassle-free experience:
Departure:
Scan Boarding Pass: Scan your boarding pass on the DigiYatra E-Gate.
Facial Scan: Look into the camera for facial recognition.
Terminal Entry: The E-Gate will open, allowing entry into the terminal.
Pre-Security DigiYatra E-Gate:
Approach E-Gate: Walk up to the DigiYatra E-Gate at the security check.
Facial Scan: Look into the camera on the DigiYatra E-Gate.
Gate Opening: After validation, the E-Gate will open, enabling passengers to proceed toward their boarding gate.
Boarding Gate:
Flight Boarding: Once the flight starts boarding, approach the biometric camera at the boarding gate.
Facial Validation: Look into the biometric camera for validation.
Aircraft Boarding: Post-validation, proceed towards the aircraft.
Passengers don't have to display their boarding pass or ID at various checkpoints.
There will be less waiting time and fewer staff interactions.
Security is improved because the system links the passenger to their booking.
Only genuine passengers can enter each checkpoint.
The airport operator gets immediate updates on passenger numbers, making resource planning more effective.
Airlines gain insights into where passengers are located within the airport.
Overall, the airport's efficiency and passenger flow will be improved.
With DigiYatra's innovative approach, air travel in India is set to undergo a transformative experience, providing passengers with a seamless, efficient, and secure journey through the nation's airports.
