COVID is back and this time with its new far relative "JN. 1". India's southern states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Karnataka are its new victim. However, Bangaloreans are feeling the heat in the winter!
In a move aimed at curbing the spread of the JN.1 COVID-19 variant, the Karnataka government has reintroduced mandatory seven-day home isolation for all individuals testing positive for the virus. This announcement, made by Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Thursday, December 28th, 2023, comes as the state witnesses a slight uptick in cases.
The JN.1 variant, categorized as a "variant of interest" by the World Health Organization, has been detected in 36 individuals across Karnataka. While health officials assure the public that the variant is not currently considered highly dangerous, the precautionary measure of mandatory isolation has been implemented to contain any potential spread.

The JN.1 virus is a new cousin of the original COVID-19 virus (SARS-CoV-2), and it comes from the same family as Omicron, another well-known strain. So far, there is no indication that JN.1 causes more severe illness than other variants. The most common symptoms reported are similar to those of other Omicron variants, such as runny nose, cough, fatigue, sore throat, and body ache.
Previously, asymptomatic patients were not required to isolate. However, under the new guidelines, all COVID-positive individuals, regardless of symptom severity, must adhere to a week-long home quarantine. Close contacts of confirmed cases will also be tested for the virus.
Out of 568 Active COVID cases, 514 are isolating at home while 14 are in intensive care. Officials are closely monitoring home isolation cases for future precautions.
The state government is preparing for more COVID cases by buying oxygen supplies and requesting vaccines from the central government.
Due to a shortage of Covaxin and Covishield, Karnataka has turned to Corbett vaccines as a temporary substitute for preventative measures and has requested stocks from the central government.
However, even with daily raises in the active cases, the government has assured that there won’t be any restrictions to New-year celebrations in Namma Bengaluru, Karnataka. However, people are requested to mask up and practice social distancing.
Mask Up: Wear your mask like a fancy accessory, especially in crowds.
Keep Your Distance: Give others some space, even on the dance floor.
Wash Your Hands: Don't let germs crash the party – sanitize often!
Feeling Sick? Stay Home: If you're coughing or sniffling, grab some rest, not confetti.
