In a remarkable achievement, Istanbul Grand Airport (IGA) in Turkey has claimed the top spot as the world’s best-connected airport. What makes this feat even more impressive is that IGA only opened its doors in 2018, and in just six years, it has risen to the top, surpassing well-established global airports. Currently, IGA operates 309 nonstop flights to various international destinations, largely through Turkish Airlines, the airline known for serving more countries than any other.
Selahattin Bilgen, CEO of Istanbul Grand Airport, highlighted the strategic significance of the airport’s location. “Our position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia makes us a vital hub for international travel,” Bilgen shared in an interview. He also emphasized the airport's resilience, noting that IGA was the fastest airport globally to recover to pre-pandemic passenger levels, welcoming around 90 million passengers annually.
Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi has solidified its position as India’s premier aviation hub, serving as a crucial gateway for both domestic and international travel. Recording 73.7 million passengers in FY2024, IGIA has seen a year-on-year growth of 13%, securing its rank as the world’s 10th busiest airport by passenger traffic, according to Airports Council International (ACI) rankings for 2023–24.
Beyond its passenger traffic achievements, IGI Delhi Airport has been named the best airport in India and South Asia for the sixth consecutive year and ranks 36th globally in 2024, according to Skytrax. Emerging as a new international hub in South and Southeast Asia, IGIA is connected to 149 destinations worldwide, served by 58 foreign carriers and 9 Indian carriers, making it a vital player in the region's aviation landscape.
Following Istanbul in the rankings is Frankfurt Airport in Germany, which offers 296 nonstop flights. Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport in France and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands take the third and fourth spots, with 282 and 270 nonstop destinations, respectively. Interestingly, Chicago O'Hare in the United States ties with Amsterdam Schiphol, making it the best-connected airport in North America with 270 nonstop flights.
Dubai International Airport, known for its extensive global reach, ranks sixth, serving 269 nonstop destinations. Meanwhile, Dallas Fort Worth International in the U.S. takes the seventh spot, showcasing North America’s strong presence in the top 10.
Shanghai Pudong International Airport, securing the eighth position, is Asia’s best-connected airport with 243 nonstop destinations. It's a significant player in the region, acting as a major gateway between East and West.
Despite being the world’s busiest airport by passenger volume, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International in the U.S. ranks ninth on the connectivity list, offering 237 nonstop flights. This ranking highlights the balance between passenger volume and global connectivity.
