Travel, while thrilling, can sometimes take unexpected turns. While the thought of exploring new destinations by train brings joy, there's always an element of unpredictability.
For this reason, Indian Railways and IRCTC have introduced a highly affordable travel insurance policy that offers extensive coverage for rail travelers, protection of up to Rs 10 lakh at just 45 paise per passenger!
Yes, for less than half a rupee, passengers can now board with the added confidence of being covered against potential mishaps.
From luggage loss and theft to serious accidents, IRCTC’s insurance covers a wide range of incidents, ensuring you’re protected throughout your journey.
Priced at just 45 paise, it’s an incredible deal for peace of mind. This optional insurance is exclusively available for Indian citizens booking their tickets via IRCTC’s online platform, offering protection during travel on Indian Railways.
Let’s dive into how this insurance works, who qualifies, and the significant benefits it provides.
IRCTC’s insurance costs only 45 paise per passenger, inclusive of all taxes. However, while IRCTC facilitates the transaction, the policy is underwritten by partnered insurance companies, and the liability lies directly between the insured passenger and the insurance provider.
The policy is exclusively available for Indian citizens who book confirmed (CNF), RAC, or partially confirmed (Part CNF) e-tickets through IRCTC.
Note that tickets booked through third-party agents or for foreign nationals are not eligible. Children under 5 years without a reserved seat or berth are excluded from this policy, but kids between 5-11 years with a ticket, either reserved or unreserved, qualify for coverage.
This insurance provides a safety net up to Rs 10 lakh and applies to all classes and ticket categories. Here’s what’s included:
Transportation of Mortal Remains: Rs 10,000
Should the unthinkable happen, this policy covers transportation of remains to the designated location.
Moreover, if an alternative transport mode is arranged by Indian Railways following a rail incident, this portion of the trip will also be covered.
Hospitalization for Injury: Up to Rs 2 lakh
If an insured passenger requires hospitalization due to an injury sustained during the trip, medical expenses up to Rs 2 lakh are covered.
Permanent Partial Disability: Up to Rs 7.5 lakh
In the unfortunate event of a permanent partial disability, the insurance pays 75% of the insured sum, equaling Rs 7.5 lakh.
Permanent Total Disability: Up to Rs 10 lakh
A permanent total disability that results from an accident during the journey entitles the insured passenger to a payout of Rs 10 lakh.
Death: Rs 10 lakh
If a passenger loses their life due to an accident within 12 months of the incident, the policy provides Rs 10 lakh to the nominee of the deceased.
Upon booking, passengers receive an SMS or email with the policy details and a link to fill in nominee information.
It’s crucial to enter the nominee details to ensure a seamless claim process; otherwise, the settlement may default to legal heirs. Nomination details can also be managed directly on the insurance provider’s website.
