Red alert issued for cold wave in these four states; 119 flights face delay in Delhi: See IMD full forecast here

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that dense fog conditions will persist over North India for the next four days. According to the weather agency, there is a likelihood of light rainfall or snowfall in the Western Himalayan Region from January 25 to 30. The IMD has also cautioned about severe cold day conditions prevailing over North India for the next two days, followed by a decrease in intensity.

On January 25, the IMD issued a Red alert for cold wave in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan, followed by an orange alert in these states until January 28.

IMD Forecast: Rainfall

  • Due to the influence of two weak Western Disturbances, there is a possibility of light isolated rainfall or snowfall in the Western Himalayan Region from January 25 to 30.

  • A combination of anti-cyclonic circulation over Northwest Bay of Bengal, cyclonic circulation over east Vidarbha, and a trough running from South Interior Karnataka to interior Odisha in the lower levels may lead to light rainfall in Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim, and northeast India over the next two days.

  • Moderate rainfall is expected in many places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from January 25 to 28.

IMD Forecast: Dense Fog

  • Very dense fog conditions are likely in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh from January 25 to 28.

  • Dense fog conditions are expected in Delhi on January 25.

  • Bihar may experience very dense fog conditions from January 25 to 28.

  • Dense fog conditions are likely in north Rajasthan, north Madhya Pradesh on January 25-26, and in Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura on January 25.

IMD Forecast: Cold Day

  • Severe Cold Day conditions are expected in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh on January 25 and 26.

  • Cold Day conditions will prevail in these regions on January 27 and 28.

  • Severe Cold Day conditions are anticipated in West Rajasthan on January 25.

  • Some parts of Bihar may experience severe Cold Day conditions on January 25, with cold day conditions in isolated pockets for the subsequent 3 days.

  • Cold Day conditions are expected to continue in Madhya Pradesh on January 25.

IMD Forecast: Cold Wave

  • Severe cold wave conditions are likely over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on January 25 and 26.

  • Ground frost conditions are expected at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on January 25.

IMD Forecast Minimum Temperature:

Minimum Temperature IMD forecasts no significant change in minimum temperatures in many parts over the next 2 days, with a subsequent rise by 2-3°C over the following 3 days.

IMD Forecast Delhi AQI drop to ‘severe’:

Delhi AQI drop to 'severe' Pollution levels in Delhi have worsened, reaching the "severe" zone of the air quality index (AQI) due to calm winds exacerbating the effect of local emissions. Delhi recorded a 24-hour average AQI of 409 at 4 pm, significantly worse than 368 (very poor) a day ago and 333 on Monday. Wednesday's AQI was the worst since January 14 when it reached 447.

Flight, Train Delayed

Dense fog has led to several flight operations being delayed at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi. Both flights and train operations have been affected due to the persistent dense fog in the national capital.
